The English Electric Lightning was a product of the Cold War. Designed at a time when the threat of Soviet bombers cruising over British airspace was very real, the Lightning was a way of getting a defensive screen upstairs in the shortest possible time. It could reach speeds of mach2 and was described by pilots as like "being saddled to a skyrocket".
