"Sailor Malan, 1940"

Adolph Gysbert Malan DSO & Bar, DFC, was an RAF squadron leader during the crucial summer months of 1940, when the Battle of Britain raged across southern England and the channel. Better known as Sailor Malan, this South African fighter pilot led 74 Squadron throughout the Battle. He survived the war with an impressive tally of 27 aircraft destroyed and many more damaged.

This pencil sketch shows him at the controls of his Spitfire. As you can see, the sketch is framed within blue-painted wood and is under glass.
