Painting of RAF Sunderland aircraft

"Sunderland Dawn"

A Sunderland flying boat roars into life, ploughing through the water before curving up into the sky.

The Short Sunderland was used throughout the war by the allies against enemy shipping and especially against german submarines, the dreaded 'U Boats'. The Sunderland squadrons also proved extremely effective at search and rescure operations, often staying aloft for hours as they scoured hundreds of square miles of ocean for survivors of lost aircraft and ships.

The aircraft depicted here, NS-Z, now resides in the RAF museum in Hendon.
