Streets often look better at night, and it helps if they're lit up by more light bulbs than is strictly necessary.
The following two photos are of the Blackpool Illuminations and were taken in the late 80s with my Ricoh KR10 SLR. I set up a tripod in the road, and no one paid me any attention at all. I'm not sure if that would be the case today.
